The earliest date WE could find for a chip beef reference was in the 1910, The Manual For Army Cooks, where it was called “Stewed, chip beef.” That particular recipe called for 15 pounds of chipped beef to feed 60 men. This dish was a staple in WWI FEEding the troops in the trenches. It has been a military staple ever since. With a long list of colorful names, S.O.S. ( morse code for help) Shit on a Shingle, Same shit different day, in Lancaster it is sometimes called Frizzled Beef, by any name it is just damn good!
